360 Reviews are a professional feedback tool designed to help anyone from a CEO to a store clerk develop and hone their professional skills. While a standard review is about the employee's job performance, a 360 review evaluates the employee themselves.

Account Administrator

An Account Administrator is a specific type of user within SurveyGizmo that has administrative capabilities that general SurveyGizmo users do not. Learn more!

Account ID

When interacting with SurveyGizmo staff, you may be asked to provide your Account ID number (often referred to as your CID). This number is available to Account Administrator users via Account > Account Summary.

The Account ID will be available as the second line item within the Account Summary page.

Action

An action is an element that can be added to your survey to perform a task. These tasks are specifically performed behind the scenes without the survey respondent being aware of it. Learn more!

Active Contact Status

An active contact is able to receive email campaign emails. Learn more!

Add-As-Needed Questions

Add-as-needed questions allow your respondents to repeatedly answer a given question or set of questions. This feature is only available in custom group and contact form question types. Learn more!

Additional Instructional Text

Additional Instructional Text can be added within survey questions to provide clarity for your survey respondents while taking your survey. Learn more in our tutorial on Adding Instructions.

Admin-Only Pages

Like Administrative Questions, Admin-Only Pages are not visible to the respondent but are, instead, available within the response for survey administrators. This feature ensures survey respondents answers are anonymous. Anonymous surveys in SurveyGizmo do not store IP or geo-location data. Learn more!

Answer Grouping

The Answer Groupingfeature allows you to group answer options for reporting purposes. This functionality allows you to do what is often referred to as "recoding" in data preparation parlance.

A common use case for grouping answer options is Top and Bottom Box Scoring, but this feature can be used for all sorts of analysis and reporting needs.

Answer Option Logic

Answer option logic allows you to conditionally show answer options based on rules you set up. Learn more!

Answer Option Quotas

Answer option quotas allow you to set a limit for the number of times a given answer option can be selected. Learn more!

Answer Option Special Settings

Special Settings allow you to set up answer options such as "None of the above" or "Not applicable" so that other options cannot be selected in tandem. Other Special Settings allow you to collect other, please specify info, fix the position of an option when randomizing and more. Learn more!

API

Asynchronous Connect

This feature is used with our Webhooks. It will asynchronously process the connections. When this option is toggled to Yes, the webhook will retry if it fails thus preventing surveys from loading slowly. This option is only compatible with the POST and cannot display or prepopulate questions in the survey. Learn more!

Attribute

In the Conjoint question type, an Attribute is a characteristic of a product (e.g. color, price, etc.). An Attribute is made up of various Levels (e.g. silver, black red). Learn more!

Attrition

The loss of respondents before a survey or study has been completed.

Audio Player Element

The Audio Player element allows you to add audio that respondents can play as part of the survey. Learn More!

Automatically Submit a Page or AutoSubmit

A feature commonly used in complex surveys with custom scripting or actions that need to fire after data is collected. When set to Automatically Submit, a page will not be visible to respondents. Learn more!

Average

The quotient of the sum of several quantities and their number; a mean. It is one of several measures of central tendency. Learn more!

Average Completion Time

The average completion time is computed across all complete responses. A good response completion time depends on the length of your survey. If your average completion time seems too fast, we suggest using the Data Cleaning Tool to quarantine the faster responses. Learn more!

B

Bar Chart

Beacon

A beacon is the embeddable Javascript code available for Website Intercept surveys. The beacon is placed on each webpage where you want to trigger your intercept survey. Learn more!

Bias

Bounce

An email message that has been returned as permanently undeliverable. Causes include invalid addresses (domain name doesn't exist, typos, changed address, etc.). Learn more about our status definitions here!.

Branded Subdomain

A Branded Subdomain uses a subdomain that you input in your Account Settings, to create a more customized link, like: http:/mydomain.mysurveyname.sgizmo.com/s3/. Learn more!

Bulk File Export

The Bulk File Export feature allows you to download all files uploaded into your File Upload Question by your survey respondents. Learn more!

Bulk PDF Export

The Bulk PDF Export feature allows you to download a PDF copy of all individual responses for a given survey. Learn more!

Business-to-Business (B2B)

Trade and commerce conducted between businesses. For example manufacturers and wholesalers often transact with other businesses.

Business-to-Consumer (B2C)

Trade and commerce conducted between a business and the end consumer. Most commonly B2C businesses are retailers providing the general public with goods and/or services.

Within the Insights Canvas, the Calculation data element allows you to reference survey data, run calculations on the data, and output the results to your Insights Canvas (all using SurveyGizmo's Custom Scripting library). Explore examples here!

CAN-SPAM

The CAN-SPAM Act, a law that sets the rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have you stop emailing them, and spells out tough penalties for violations. Learn more!

Card

In the Conjoint Question Type, a card (aka Concept or Alternate) is a representation of a product with a single Level for each Attribute. Learn more!

Cascading Dropdown Menu Question Type

The Cascading Dropdown Menu allows you to drill down through hierarchical data by using one dropdown menu as a filter into the next. Learn more!

Checkbox Grid Question Type

The Checkbox Grid allows respondents to select multiple answer options (columns) for each row in a table. Learn more!

Checkboxes Question Type

Chi Square

The chi square (X²) statistic is used to investigate whether the datasets from two questions are correlated. Learn more!

Christmas-Tree Behavior

A survey response in which the responses to questions follow a pattern of a Christmas tree or indicating that the response may not represent the respondent's actual opinion. If your are worried about this type of behavior in your surveys, we suggest using the Data Cleaning Tool to quarantine patterned responses.

Click

An email message with a survey link that has been clicked by the recipient, however the survey was abandoned on the first page. Learn More about our status definitions.

Closing a Survey

Closing a project will close all survey share links preventing respondents from recording new responses. Your closed survey will show as closed on your dashboard. Learn More!

Comment Field

Comment fields add an open-text comment field to questions in your survey. This is useful for gathering details about why your respondents answer a question a particular way. The data will be associated with that question and will be available for analysis using our Open Text Analysis tool. Learn More!

Comparison Report

A Comparison Report allows you to view your summarized data broken down by a subgroup of the data. This grouping can be set up based on a question in your survey (such as Organization, Gender, Occupation, Question 42, etc). Learn More!

Compliance Administrator

Compliance Administrators can apply the Data Retention Policy (DRP) defined by account administrators to a survey, question, and questions within question library elements. Learn more about Data Retention Policy Settings and Compliance Administrators.

Conditional Styles

Within the Insights Canvas, Conditional Styles allow you to perform a number of dynamic changes to your Insights Canvas elements based on data associated with any Question Chart elements that have already been added to your canvas.
Some of the changes that you can make include: the ability to dynamically replace an image on your canvas, change element colors, or hide elements. Learn more!

Confidence Interval

The range around a survey result for which there is a high statistical probability that it contains the true population parameter.

Confidence Level (Significance Level)

The probability that the value of a parameter falls within a specified range of values.

Data Encryption

The Project Data Encryption feature allows you to encrypt data that is received via your survey links. This means that the data that's received cannot be accessed without a key, and therefore provides a higher level of protection for your data. Data Retention Policy

A data retention policy, or records retention policy, is an organization's established protocol for retaining information for operational or regulatory compliance needs. Within SurveyGizmo, the Data Retention Policy (DRP) Settings allow you to specify how long you wish to retain survey responses. You can automatically enroll surveys in your DRP, as well as, set up Compliance Administrators who can manually apply your DRP settings to surveys, questions, and question library elements. DKIM

DKIM is a means for confirming that the content of an email is not tampered with from the time it leaves SurveyGizmo servers to the time it reaches the intended recipient. It is a system designed to detect email spoofing by allowing receiving mail exchanges to check that incoming mail from a domain is authorized by that domain's administrators. Email Campaign

A SurveyGizmo Email Campaign allows you to quickly send out your survey to a list of contacts via an email set up within SurveyGizmo. The great thing about Email Campaigns is that it sends a unique link to each contact, so you'll have the ability to track each contact's progress and send reminders to those who haven't completed your survey and thank you messages to those who did! Email Spoofing

Email spoofing is the forgery of an email header so that the message appears to have originated from someone or somewhere other than the actual source.

Enterprise Feedback Management (EFM)

EFM is a system of processes and software that enables organizations to centrally manage deployment of surveys while dispersing authoring and analysis throughout an organization. EFM systems typically provide different roles and permission levels for different types of users, such as novice survey authors, professional survey authors, survey reporters and translators. EFM can help an organization establish a dialogue with employees, partners, and customers regarding key issues and concerns and potentially make customer specific real-time interventions. EFM consists of data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Essay / Long Answer Question Type

Exports

Exports allow you to export raw data from your survey. The CSV/Excel Export is the most popular export type.

File Upload Question Type

Filtering

Filtering allows you to include only specific data in your report or export. For example, you may only want to see data for respondents who answer a specific question, or data from a certain date range. Learn about filtering reportsor exports.

Firmographics

Statistical data regarding the characteristics of an organization.

Fixed Position

This setting can be applied to the Save and Continue bar to anchor the bar, keeping it in view while survey respondents scroll.

Focus Group

A form of qualitative research in which a group of people participate in a guided discussion about their opinions, beliefs and attitudes toward a product, service, concept, advertisement, etc.

Footer Text

Footer Text refers to text found at the bottom (footer) of a webpage or email message. In SurveyGizmo, footer text can be customized within surveys as well as email campaign messages.

Forward Only Survey

This survey setting will remove a survey's back button. This is great for projects in which you want to prevent your respondents from using the back button to change answers on previous pages. Learn how to enable the Forward-Only setting.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a very powerful (and free) web analytics suite. It allows you to track survey conversions, path analysis, sources of survey traffic and even various versions of your forms and surveys. Learn about SurveyGizmo's Google Analytics Integration!

Google Sheets Integration

Using the Google Spreadsheet Integration you can push realtime data from your survey into a Google Spreadsheet. This integration functions to push data into Google Sheets, but at this time cannot pull data from Sheets.

Grouping Question Type (Card Sort)

The Grouping (Card Sort) question type is interactive and allows respondents to categorize options by clicking and dragging "Items" into "Groups". SurveyGizmo offers three different varieties of the Grouping (Card Sort) question: Grouping (Closed Card Sort) question type, Grouping (Open Card Sort) question type, and the Quick Sort question type.

Hard Bounce

An email that has been returned to the sender as permanently undeliverable, usually due to an invalid recipient email address. Learn more about SurveyGizmo email status definitions.

Hidden Value Action

A Hidden Value Action allows you to capture data in your survey that your survey respondents are not able to see. Hidden Values can be used for gathering data, storing browser information, and even pre-populating questions later in the survey. Learn how to add and configure a Hidden Value Action.

Hide After Answering

This feature allows you to hide a question after it has been answered to prevent a survey respondent from changing their answer. Learn how to apply this setting to a Radio Button question.

Highly Interactive Question Types

Questions that engage the survey respondent with images, pictures, video or are otherwise interactive e.g., drag and drop questions.

HTML Embed

Our HTML Embed includes the HTML code for the first page of your survey to paste on your website. The survey respondent is then redirected to www.surveygizmo.com once they submit the first page. Explore SurveyGizmo's survey embedding options.

iFrame Embed

Use the iFrame Embed to embed a survey into your website/blog within an isolated frame. This method gives you control over the height and width in the actual embed code. It is our most reliable method for displaying a survey on your website. Explore SurveyGizmo's survey embedding options.

Image Element

The Image element allows you to add an image to your survey. Use Images for your respondents to reference in the survey. For example, ask respondents to compare one product or logo to another. Image elements do not collect data. Add Image Elements to your survey!

Image Heatmap Question Type

The Image Heatmap question type allows your survey respondents to provide feedback on an image by clicking anywhere on that image and selecting answer options. You can also configure the question to allow respondents to comment on their selections. The Image Heatmap question reports as a heatmap element showing aggregated data of your respondents' clicks plotted across your image. The areas of your image with a high density of respondent clicks will be indicated by color intensity (the more red the color, the more respondents have clicked on that area relative to other areas of the image).

Inactive Contact Status

An Inactive Contact is no longer active within a specific email campaign but has not been unsubscribed from the campaign. Learn about the different contact statuses that you might encounter in SurveyGizmo email campaigns.

Independent Variable(s)

The conditions or factors that are explored in relationship to their influence on the dependent variable.

Individual Response

Each response to your survey is recorded and is available for to review, edit, convert, or delete under Results > Individual Responses. As such, we refer to these as "individual responses" throughout the application and the documentation. Learn more in our Individual Responses Tutorial.

Insights Canvas

SurveyGizmo's Insights Canvas allows you to build fully-customizable real-time dashboards to share with your clients and/or stakeholders. You can add question charts and data from multiple surveys, perform and output calculations, and add custom graphics and images, just to name a few options. Learn more!

Integration

An integration allows two applications to work together. SurveyGizmo is integrated with a number of external applications.

Interaction

In SurveyGizmo, Interaction most commonly refers to a survey's behavior on a specific device type i.e mobile vs desktop. Learn about your options for controlling survey behavior on specific device types.

IP Address

An IP address is a unique string of numbers separated by periods that identifies a computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.

IP-Based Duplicate Protection

IP-Based Duplicate Protection allows one survey response per IP address. Because corporate environments often share a single IP address, this option is not ideal if distributing your survey to multiple recipients within the same organization (as they may be sharing an IP address). Is After or Equal To Date(≥)

This logic condition can be used for any question that is formatted as a date where the expected response is a single answer. Get started with SurveyGizmo logic.

Is Answered

This logic condition is very versatile. It is usually used for questions that such as text fields that are not required. If the text field has an entry, then the rule is evaluated as true. Get started with SurveyGizmo logic.

Is Before or Equal To Date(≤)

This logic condition can be used for any question that is formatted as a date where the expected response is a single answer. Get started with SurveyGizmo logic.

Is Exactly Equal to

This logic operator is the default for a the open-text question type. This will evaluate as an exact match (case sensitive). Get started with SurveyGizmo logic.

Is Greater Than (>)

This logic condition is used for any question where the expected response is a single answer and is numeric. This could include the Number question type, Radio Button, or a Dropdown Menu question with numeric reporting values. If the answer given is greater than the value set in the logic builder, then the logic condition will be met. Get started with SurveyGizmo logic.

Is Greater Than or Equal To (≥)

This logic condition is used for any question where the expected response is a single answer and is numeric. This could include the Number question type or a Radio button or a Dropdown Menu question with numeric reporting values. A logic condition available for any question where the expected response is a single answer, and is numeric. Is Less Than or Equal to (≤)

Logic condition used for any question where the expected response is a single answer and is numeric. This could include the Number question type or a Radio button or a Dropdown Menu question with numeric reporting values. Is Not Answered

A logic condition that servers as the opposite of "is answered", this condition is usually used for text fields that are not required. If the question has no answer selected or in the case of a textbox has no answer given, then the rule is evaluated as true. Get started with SurveyGizmo logic.

Is Not Exactly Equal To

This logic condition is the opposite of "is exactly equal to", it is typically used for the open-text question type to set the criteria that it should not match for the logic action to be triggered. Get started with SurveyGizmo logic.

Is Not One of the Following Answers

The logic condition that servers as the opposite of "is one of the following answers", this condition is used to search through all the answers given for that particular question (or row in the case of a table) and trigger the logic action if NONE of the values selected in the logic rule are found. Is One of the Following Answers

One of the most versatile and powerful logic operators, it is used for single answer (radio button), multiple answer (checkbox), lists, and table question types. This operator is used to search through all the answers given for that particular question (or row in the case of a table) and trigger the logic action if ANY of the values selected in the logic rule are found. Is True/False

The "Is True/Is False" operators are available to use only in combination with the Is Mobile (true/false) option in the left-most dropdown. This evaluates whether the respondent is using a mobile browser (This is the only operator you should use with Is Mobile). Get started with SurveyGizmo logic.

JavaScript

Javascript is an object-oriented computer programming language commonly used to create interactive effects within web browsers. Javascript is not the same thing as Java. Learn about adding Javascript to your surveys.

Javascript Embed

Kiosk Mode

L

Language Bar

If you have multiple language versions of your survey, the language bar allows your survey respondents to choose a language that best suits them while taking the survey. Learn how to set up a language bar in your survey.

Learning Records Store

Using our Learning Managment System/Learning Record Store Integration you can push survey and quiz activity to any LMS/LRS that uses Tin Can API (aka xAPI).

Level

In the Conjoint question type, Levels are the various values of an Attribute. So for example, for the Price Attribute, the levels would be monetary values: $500, $600, $750, $900, $999, and $1200.

License

Each user in an account has a license. The user's license determines which features the users has access to in the SurveyGizmo application. Learn more about managing user licenses.

Likert Scale

A rating scale which measures respondents' levels of agreement or disagreement with a series of statements or likert items. Learn about adding a Likert Scale question to your survey.

Link Based Quota

The Link-based Quota is, as the name suggests, a quota set for each individual survey share link sent out. For example, if you have multiple email campaigns set up you can set separate quotas for each email campaign link. Or, you might have shared your survey on Facebook or Twitter, as well as embedded it on your website; you can set separate quotas for these links as well. Once a quota is met, no additional responses will be collected. Set up a link-based quota.

Link Status - Open/Closed

By default, any survey link that you create in SurveyGizmo has a status of "Open'. Link Status can be toggled to 'Closed' via the link settings. A closed link cannot collect responses, and will instead present a customizable message. Learn more about link settings.

Logic

SurveyGizmo logic features allow you to customize your survey for each respondent by dynamically showing survey content based on things like answers to previous questions within the survey, email campaign contact information, or URL variables. Learn about the various logic options available..

Login/Password Action

The Login/Password action allows you to set up access protection for your survey. Respondents will be required to login to take your survey. You can require both a username and password or a password only. You can also use the Login/Password action for prepopulating your survey with data. Learn more about the Login/Password action here.

Longitudinal Reporting

Longitudinal Study

A study in which data is obtained on the same individuals two or more times and thus measures the relationship between variables over time.

Looping

Referring to dynamically repeating/creating content based on a respondent's question answers, looping is referred to as piping in SurveyGizmo.

MailChimp is a marketing automation platform, as well as an email marketing service.

Max Diff Question Type

Using the Max Diff question (a.k.a. maximum difference scaling) respondents are shown a set of the possible attributes and are asked to indicate the best and worst attributes (or most and least important, most and least appealing, etc.). Learn more about the Max Diff question here.

Maximum or Minimum Selectable Options

This feature requires respondents to select a minimum or maximum number of selectable options for a question. Learn how to configure this option.

Maximum Word and Character Count

Max Word Count allows you to restrict the total number of words entered by a respondent in your Essay questions. Similarly, Max Characters Count allows you to restrict the total number of characters a respondent can enter into Essay questions. Learn more about Maximum Word and Character count.

Median

The middle value that separates the higher half of the responses for a given variable from the lower half. It is one of several measures of central tendency.

Merge Codes

Merge Codes are snippets of text that can be used throughout SurveyGizmo to dynamically pull and display data previously entered in your survey, email invitations, etc. Learn more in our Merge Code Tutorial.

Min Word and Character Count

Min Word Count allows you to require that the respondent enter a minimum number of words in an Essay question. Whereas, Min Character Count requires a minimum number of characters be entered by the respondent. Learn more about Minimum Word and Character count.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication (MFA), sometimes referred to as two-factor authentication, allows you to add another layer of security to your SurveyGizmo account.

When you enable MFA, in addition to providing an email address and password upon login, users will need to authenticate via a Google Authenticator compatible app.

Multiple Regression Analysis

A statistical procedure for understanding the effects of two or more independent variables on a dependent variable. Widely used for prediction and forecasting.

In statistics nomenclature upper-case N refers to the population size. Lower-case n refers to the sample size.

Net Promoter Score (NPS)

Net Promoter Score, developed by Fred Reichheld, measures the loyalty of a company's current customers or users. The NPS measures how likely someone is to recommend your product or service to their friends and colleagues. Learn about adding the NPS question to your survey.

Net Promoter Score Question Type

Net Promoter Score questions are used to gauge customer loyalty. Respondents are asked to rate a product or business on a scale from 0 to 10. Typically, the reporting value is numeric for analysis purposes. Learn about the NPS question and how the NPS score is calculated.

O

Offline Mode

Offline surveys allow you to collect data in remote locations, or anywhere you don't have a reliable internet connection. Learn about taking your SurveyGizmo survey offline.

Open Text

Open text typically refers to data collected via all stand-alone open text questions in your survey. This includes textbox questions such as number, email, percent validated fields, as well as textbox fields in Custom Groups and Contact Groups.

Opt-in

A user is given the option to receive bulk email (email sent to many people at the same time). Typically this is a mailing list, newsletter, or advertising; but also includes survey invitations. If permission is not obtained before sending and email, it is considered spam.

Other Text

Other text refers to data collected via an 'other, please specify' textbox that is included as an option within a Radion Button or Checkbox question. Read about adding an 'other textbox' to your compatible survey questions.

Other Textbox

An other textbox is a textfield that is associated with an answer option that typically reads "Other" or "Other (Please Specify)." Other textboxes allow respondents to provide an answer that is outside of your predetermined list of answer options. Learn more in our Other Textbox Tutorial!

Overall Response Quota

The Overall Response Quota is the total number of completed responses allowed for the entire survey. If you want to limit the total responses for your survey, this is the type of quota you will want to use. Once that quota is met, no new responses will be allowed to be collected. P

Page Description

Page Descriptions are text fields that are available to add topic headers and descriptions to each page of your survey. Learn about page descriptions and how they should be used.

Page ID

The page ID is static and unique - this is different than the page number. The Page ID is assigned to a page in order of creation. Learn how to track down the page IDs for your survey pages.

Page Logic

Use Page Logic to conditionally show groups of questions based on a previous answer. Page Logic allows you to efficiently set up logic for groups of questions. Instead of going through the steps for setting up logic on question after question, you can move all questions with the same logic rules to a single page and set up the logic on the page.

Page Timer

The Page Timer is a survey Action element that allows you to set a time limit for a specific page in your survey, all pages in your survey, or the entire survey. The Page Timer is perfect for your online quizzes.

Page Title

Titles can be added to each of your survey's pages and can be helpful in organizing your survey content as well as offering clues for your respondents about each page's content.

Panel Company

A market research agency that manages permanent representative samples available for purchase for online survey responses. If you'd like help purchasing panel responses, click here. To learn how to set up your own panel integration, click here.

Part-Worth Utility

Within the Conjoint Question, Type, a utility is a measure of relative desirability or worth. The higher the utility, the more desirable the attribute level. Levels that have high utilities have a large positive impact on influencing respondents to choose products. Learn More!

Partial Response Status

A Partial status indicates a respondent who has reached the survey and clicked the Next button without ever reaching the Thank You Page or another Terminal Page. If you are using Email Campaigns, respondents with a status of Partial will receive Reminder Messages.

Pass/Fail

One of two types of quizzes available via the Quiz Score Action, the pass/fail variety allows answers to be evaluated as correct/incorrect based upon an answer key set up within the Quiz Score action. A specified percentage of correct answers is used to determine whether the respondent passed or failed the quiz.

Payment Form/Action

The Payment Form/Action allows you to set up an order or donation form for purchasers to select various products and services and submit a payment. Payment is collected via Stripe.

Percent Branch

Percent Branching in SurveyGizmo is a powerful tool that allows you to perform A/B Split Testing. Using the Percent Branch Action, you can assign a percentage of respondents to see a specific set of questions that differs from another branch's set. This feature is particularly helpful for product testing or other market research.

Phishing

Phishing is a fraudulent practice where the offenders attempt to induce individuals to reveal personal information such as passwords and credit card numbers. Most commonly, the main vehicle for phishing is email. However, surveys can also be used in an attempt to gather sensitive information.

Pie Chart

A graphical representation in which the data points for a given variable are displayed as slices of a pie. Within Standard Reports, Pie Charts are the default reporting element for single-select questions such as Radio Buttons.

Pipe into Options

Piping into Options allows you to use the selected/unselected options from a question on a previous page as the options in a follow-up question.

Piped Data Export

The Piped Data Export is designed to export raw data from either question piped (including row piped tables) or page piped questions. Because question and page piping repeats the question/page based on the source question, simple CSV/Excel Exports of the raw data from surveys using such piping can have an unmanageable number of columns. The Piped Data Export better handles this data by collating the questions from repeated questions and pages for each response.

Piping

Piping allows you to use data provided by your survey respondents to customize/personalize their ongoing survey experience. Piping comes in many varieties in SurveyGizmo, including Simple Piping, Option Piping, Question Piping, and Page Piping. Learn all things piping by visiting our FAQ.

Placeholder Text

Alternatively referred to as dummy text, placeholder text is text that reserves a specific place on a web page or other document for images, text, or other objects. When the user begins to type in a field with placeholder text, the placeholder text is replaced. Learn how placeholer text can be used in SurveyGizmo.

Poll

A Poll is a one-question, embeddable-only survey that displays live results.

Population

In survey terms, population represents the group about which you wish to draw conclusions.

Power Analysis

Method for calculating the number of respondents needed for the results of a survey to be considered statistically significant.

Prepopulation

Prepopulation most commonly refers to importing existing data into your survey (this may be demographic data for your customers). You can use prepopulation in SurveyGizmo to verify and update contact information or to bring in details to use in logic conditions to determine which questions are asked.

Preselecting an Answer Option

Private Domain

A Private Domain refers to the option for a completely branded survey or shared report link (no reference to SurveyGizmo), i.e.: http://surveys.mydomain.com/s3/survey

Profile Report

Creating a Profile Report allows you to compare one respondent's data to the rest of the survey sample.

Q

QR Code

A QR Code (Quick Response Code) or 2D barcode can be utilized to distribute a link, allowing respondents to scan a barcode with their smartphone or computer that will take them to your survey. QR codes are especially useful when distributing a link on printed materials or signage, as it is easier to scan a code than to type a URL into a browser.

Qualitative Data

Data that is collected for the purpose of understanding meaning or context, rather than making statistical inferences. These data are often collected via open-ended questions and are more difficult to compare and generalize. Learn how to evaluate your open-ended data with the use of Open Text Analysis.

Quantitative Data

Data that can be expressed in numeric terms. Our Standard Report offers numerous statistics for such data.

Query String

Query Strings (aka URL variables) make for a quick method for pre-populating existing data into a survey. With a simple query added to the end of the survey link, data can be stored as part of a survey response. This gives you the ability to push information into the survey through your survey for use within the survey body and/or to use when reporting on the survey response. A query string might look like this: ?department=Sales.

Question Alias

Question Aliases, available on the Logic tab of each of your questions, allow you to create a shortname for questions in your survey. These are great to use in reports, exports and custom scripting.

Question ID

Question IDs are unique numbers that are assigned per question. Each newly created question is assigned the next available ID number; a question's location within the survey does not have any bearing on its ID. Question IDs useful when writing custom scripts. These numbers are different than the question numbers.

Question Logic

Question Logic allows you to trigger a question based on a respondent's answer(s) to a previous question, their location, or information associated with their contact in an Email Campaign, to name a few options.

Question Metadata

Question Metadata refers to additional information pertaining to your survey questions that is not viewable on the Build tab by default. This information includes a questiion's ID number and its type (i.e. Checkboxes), among other pieces of information. Customize your Build tab to view this information.

Question Piping/Repeating

Question piping/repeating allows you to repeat a question using the answer(s) (either those that were selected or left unselected) from a question on a previous survey page.

Questionnaire

A research instrument consisting of a series of questions used to gather information from respondents. This term is often used interchangeably with survey.

Quiz

Using a SurveyGizmo quiz, you can create a pass/fail quiz or a magazine-style tally quiz – both of which score responses in realtime and provide the respondent with a score when they finish. Quizzes are typically used as an assessment of knowledge, abilities, or skills. Some other uses for quizzes include evaluating job applicants' qualifications and personality assessments.

Quota

Quotas are response limits. They can be set up on the overall survey as an Overall Response Quota, on a given question or segment as Segmented Quotas, or on the survey share link as a Link-based Response Quota.

Radio Button Grid Question Type

A Radio Button Grid allows repondents to select an answer option (column) for each row in a table.

Radio Button Question

Radio Button questions allow respondents to select a single choice from a list of answer options. Learn how to use Radio Buttons in SurveyGizmo.

Randomization

Survey researchers frequently use randomization as a tool to combat survey bias. Randomizing the order of questions, pages, and/or answer options in your survey prevents bias introduced by order and/or survey fatigue. Within SurveyGizmo you can randomize questions, pages and answer options!

Ranking Grid Question Type

Ranking Grid questions allow respondents to rank a list of items in order of by selecting their numeric rank from a table of radio buttons, where each column is restricted to a single answer across all rows. Learn more!

Rating (Likert Scale) Question Type

Commonly referred to as a Likert Scale, this question is a single-select rating scale question. Often, you will see this question asking you to rate an item on a satisfaction or agreement scale.

Recaptcha Action

ReCaptcha is a third-party service that adds a security measure to your survey in order to validate that the respondent is human and not a bot. Learn how to implement this in your survey.

Recurring Responses

The Recurring Responses setting allows you set up your survey so that respondents can respond repeatedly using the same link. Learn more in our Recurring Responses Tutorial.

Red-Herring Question (Trap Question)

Questions inserted in online surveys as a way to assess whether respondents are carefully processing and responding to the survey. Learn how to use red-herring questions to filter responses from disengaged respondents.

Regex Pattern Validation

Regular Expression matching is very powerful and allows you to build complex validatoin based upon a specific Regular Expression. Learn more about using Regex in SurveyGizmo.

Removed (Contact Status)

A Contact that has been deleted/removed from an Email Campaign. When uploading contacts, duplicate contacts are removed by default upon upload/add unless the "Allow Duplicates" setting is enabled. Contacts can also be deleted manually. Removed/Deleted contacts cannot be restored. See Contact Status Definitions.

Reporting Values

A Reporting Value is an internal value that is stored alongside your answer options. Reporting values are used for analysis purposes in reports and exports. Reporting Values will be the same as your answer option titles unless you specify something else. Learn more about Reporting Values!

Reports

Reports allow you to aggregate or summarize data from your surveys in various formats. The Standard Report is the most popular report type.

RequestBin

RequestBin gives you a URL that will collect requests made to it and let you inspect them in a human-friendly way. Use RequestBin to see what your HTTP client is sending or to inspect and debug webhook requests.

Required

Required validation forces a survey respondent to answer the question before proceeding to the next survey page. Learn about the various options for requiring questions within SurveyGizmo as well as Best Practices for using these settings.

Response Feed

The Response Feed is a chart type for displaying data collected via open-ended questions such as Textboxes and Essays. The text that is presented can be color-coded according to answers provided in an associated NPS question.

The Response Feed can be displayed as a Horizontal or Vertical feed. Learn more!

Response Rate (Completion Rate or Return Rate)

The ratio of the number of people who answered the survey divided by the number of people in the sample. Learn more about getting a survey completion rate in SurveyGizmo when distributing via Email Campaign.

Response Status

The status of each survey response will be listed as one of the following: Complete, Partial, Disqualified, and Deleted.

Role

A Role in SurveyGizmo is a selection of permissions that determine which aspects of a survey individual users have access to (e.g. editing a survey, deleting responses, etc). Learn more in our Team and Role Tutorial.

Salesforce

Salesforce Inc. is a global cloud computing company headquartered in San Francisco, California and is best known for its Customer Relationship Management (CRM) product. Learn about integrating SurveyGizmo with your Salesforce CRM.

Sample Size

Sample size refers to the number of people in a particular sample. In most research it is represented with a lower-case "n". The sample size is an important feature of any empirical study in which the goal is to make inferences about a population from a sample. In practice, the sample size used in a study is determined based on the expense of data collection, and the need to have sufficient statistical power.

Sampling Bias

Bias that is introduced into your survey results when some members of your intended population are less likely to be surveyed than others. Learn more about survey bias and the steps that you can take to reduce it.

Save and Continue

The Save and Continue feature allows respondents to finish an in-progress survey response at a later time. The respondent is asked to input their email address and a unique continuation link is sent to them.

Secure (https) Share Links

A secure link is a link that begins in https. These links use what is called Secure Socket Layer to transport data safely between client and survey by using an encryption algorithm. Learn about securing default SurveyGizmo share links or Branded Private Domain share links.

Segmentation

A powerful feature of the Standard Report, segmentation allows for easily comparing your data across sub-groups (segments). A common use case is to create segments based on demographic information collecged on your survey, i.e. age groups.

Segmented (Logic) Quotas

The Segmented (Logic) Quota is a question-based quota. Using this quota type, you can limit responses based upon fields in your survey, email campaign fields, and system data fields such as current date.

Semantic Differential Question Type

Semantic Differential questions are a form of rating scale designed to identify the connotative meaning of objects, words, and concepts. Similar to a Likert question, a Semantic Differential allows you to collect many opinions in one question.

Send Status

For each message in your email campaign (Initial Invite, Reminder and Thank You), a send status will be reported. Send status will be listed as one of the following: Bounce, Sent, Click, Undeliverable. Opens and Clicks are only available for HTML emails.

Sent (status)

This send status indicates than an email campaign message (Initial Invite, Reminder, Thank You) was sent from our servers.

Sentiment Analysis

Sentiment analysis is the process of identifying (statistically) whether a piece of text is positive, negative, or neutral. In the case of SurveyGizmo, the text refers to a respondent's answer to one of the compatible question types. Learn about SurveyGizmo's use of Sentiment Analysis.

Sentiment Question Type (Audio/Video)

The Sentiment Question Type allows your survey respondents to provide continuous feedback while either watching a video or listening to audio, by dragging a slider along a range. The question comes in two varieties, Video Sentiment and Audio Sentiment.

Session ID

The session ID is a unique identifier for each response. This ID number can be found in the details tab of each individual response and can be accessed via the [survey("session id")] merge code, if needed. Learn about other options for unique identifiers.

Set

In the Conjoint Question Type, a Set (aka Task) os a group of Cards presented as options to compare and choose from. Learn more!

SGUID (SurveyGizmo Unique Identifier)

SGUID or the SurveyGizmo Unique Identifier is a URL Variable that can be appended to the end of a survey link. sguid will serves to uniquely identify responses, allow respondents to save and continue, and protect against duplicate responses. Learn more in our SGUID Tutorial.

Shape Element

The Shape element provides you with a library of default shapes that can be added to your Insights Canvas to help you highlight key points and annotate your data. Think of shapes as visual aids that help you tell the story of your data. Learn more!

Short URL

A Short URL creates a randomly generated, unique link which is shorter than a typical share link, i.e. http://sgiz.mobi/s3/1a2b3c.

Signature Question Type

The Signature question type allows your survey respondents to provide their signature using their mouse or touch screen.

Simple Piping

In SurveyGizmo, the term Simple Piping refers to the use of merge codes to display an answer from a previous question on a later page. This is typically used in the question title or in a text/instruction element.

Skip Logic

Skip Logic allows you to build conditions that when met, will interrupt the natural survey flow for a respondent. Skip Logic can send a survey respondent from page one to page three, disqualify the respondent, or redirect them to an external website.

Slider List Question Type

The Slider List is an interactive question that allows respondents to select values for multiple rows of items by dragging a slider along a range.

The Slider is an interactive question that allows respondents to select a value from a continuous range by dragging a slider.

SMTP

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) allows you to send your SurveyGizmo emails from your own email server (or a third party provider i.e. SendGrid). This generally results in an improved deliverability rate and will help your email avoid recipients' spam/junk folders. An SMTP Integration is required in order to customize your email from address when sending via Email Actions or Email Campaigns.

Soft Bounce

An email message that makes it to the recipient's email server but does not make it to the intended recipient's inbox.

Soft Required

When a survey question is Soft Required, respondents will be alerted that they did not answer the question, but will be allowed to proceed to the next survey page without answering. Learn about your options for requiring survey questions and the best practices for doing so.

Special Settings

Special Settings allow you to set up answer options such as "None of the above" or "Not applicable" so that other options cannot be selected in tandem. Other Special Settings allow you to collect other, please specify info, fix the position of an option when randomizing and more. Learn more!

SPF Record

An SPF (Sender Policy Framework) record is an open standard created to stop forgery of from-email-addresses by spammers. An SPF record helps mail servers distinguish forgeries from real mail by making it possible for a domain owner to specify which mail servers they use to send mail from that domain. SPSS

SPSS is the acronym of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. SPSS is an analytics software tool used by marketers and researchers around the world. Most top research agencies use SPSS to analyze survey data and mine text data to get the most out of their research projects. Learn about exporting your survey data directly to SPSS.

SSO (Single Sign-On)

When security is of paramount importance, organizations will set up an Identity Provider (IdP) to manage all logins for all users. This allows IT professionals at the organization to control the number of logins out there in the wild. Identity providers also allow IT professionals to set up password reset rules to increase security. If you are not already using an IdP you probably won't start just for SurveyGizmo. Within SurveyGizmo you can use SSO to authenticate respondents into surveys and/or authenticate users into the SurveyGizmo application to build and administer surveys.

Standard Deviation

A statistic that measures variation or the dispersion from the mean of a given variable. It is one of several measures of central tendency. Learn about the available statistics within SurveyGizmo's Standard Report.

Standard Report

The Standard Report is the most comprehensive and most powerful reporting tool within SurveyGizmo. Use it to report on aggregate as well as individualized survey data. The Standard Report provides access to filtering, segmentation, and longitudinal reporting; it can also be shared with stakeholders via email, link, or as a hard copy.

Star Rating Grid Question Type

Star Rating Grid questions allow respondents to use stars to rate multiple items (rows) on multiple dimensions (columns). Each star represents the equivalent numeric value for that rating (e.g. Four star rating will report a 4).

Status Log

The Status Log is the best tool for monitoring your Email Campaign contacts' progress, and can be downloaded as a CSV spreadsheet. The Status Log includes information on Email Status, Response Status, and Contact Details, among others.

Status Page

This page will alert you to any non-operational parts of the SurveyGizmo application as well as any downgraded performance we may be experiencing. We try to keep this page as current as possible, so it is a good place to look if you are experiencing any issues with the application. Step Value

a mathematical function of a single real variable that remains constant within each of a series of adjacent intervals but changes in value from one interval to the next.

Straightlining

A survey response in which the responses to questions follow a pattern of a straight line indicating that the response may not represent the respondent’s actual opinion. If you are worried about this type of behavior in your surveys, we suggest using the Data Cleaning Tool to quarantine patterned responses.

Stripe

Stripe is an application that provides a way for individuals and businesses to accept payments over the Internet. SurveyGizmo's Stripe Integration allows you to collect payment via your SurveyGizmo survey. Monetary values are assigned to question answer options and and used to calculate a total payment. The survey respondent can pay the amount via credit card while completing your survey/form.

Survey Builder (Build)

This is the tab where you perform the majority of your survey configuration. This includes anything from adding survey questions to configuring logic conditions.

Survey Completion Rate

The survey completion rate is a ration of Complete responses divided by total resopnses (Complete, Partial, and Disqualified status). The completion rate is available as part of the Response Counts element that can be added to any Standard Report.

Survey Diagnostics

The Survey Diagnostics tool on your survey's Test tab includes an Estimated Length, Fatigue Score, and Accessibility Score. This information can help you determine whether or not your need to make adjustments to your survey to make it less of a burden on your respondents.

Survey Fatigue

Survey Fatigue results both from over surveying or from excessively long surveys. It can result in lower response rates over time. Learn Best Practices for avoiding survey fatigue.

Survey Legend

The Survey Legend provides a clean and easy-to-read overview of your survey and includes key information such as option, question, and page IDs, SPSS variable names, and question aliases, among others. The Survey Legend can be downloaded as Word Document.

Tableau Integration

Tableau is a powerful data visualization tool that allows you to create interactive data visualizations and dashboards.

Tally (Quiz Score)

The Tally Quiz option allows the user to assign point values to compatible answer options. These point values are then added or averaged to determine the 'score'. The user must also create score ranges with customized messages. The range that the 'score' falls into, is the one that will be displayed to the survey respondent. The Tally Quiz option is commonly used for personality quizzes. Learn how to set up a quiz score in your survey.

Team Manager

Team managers in SurveyGizmo have the ability to manage various aspects of other users on the account. Learn more about team manager permissions.

Teams

Teams are an organizational tool to help you manage your users and surveys. Once you assign a survey to a team, it's only visible to users on that team. This can help you with keeping your surveys separated by department, client or any other division you need. You can have as many teams as you need to help you organize your users. Template

A template is a preset format for a survey. This is used so that the format does not have to be recreated each time it is used. A template cannot collect or display data.

Terminal Page

A terminal page signals the end of a survey. The Thank You Page is the default terminal page for every survey that is created, though additional terminal pages can be created.

Text Highlighter Question Type

The Text Highlighter question type allows your survey respondents to provide feedback on text by clicking and highlighting specific pieces of the text sample. The Text Highlighter question reports as a heatmap element showing aggregated data of your respondents' highlights. The areas of your text sample with a high density of respondent highlights will be indicated by color intensity (the darker the color, the more respondents have highlighted that area relative to other areas of the text sample).

Text/Instructional Elements

Text/Instruction elements allow you to add a piece of text to your survey page. This is a great tool for adding respondent instructions or for passing along any relevent information. Text/Instruction elements do not collect data.

Textbox Grid Question Type

The Textbox Grid allows respondents to enter short open-ended answers to multiple questions in a table format (multiple rows and columns).

Textbox Question Type

A Textbox question is a short-answer, open-text field. Respondents can type in any text by default, though the question can be validated to collect only specifically formatted data such as an email address or a number.

Thank You Page

All new SurveyGizmo surveys will always start with two pages, an initial page, called Page One, and a Thank You Page. Thank You pages are Terminal Pages, used by the SurveyGizmo system to mark the survey response as Complete. Questions cannot be added to Thank You/Terminal Pages.

Top Box Reporting

Top and Bottom Box Scoring (also referred to as Top Box, Top 2 (or 3) Box Scores) is a very common way of reporting and analyzing scale questions. The top/bottom boxes are the highest and lowest ratings on a scale question.

For example, if you were to think of a 5-point Likert Scale as being vertically arranged, with the most positive possible rating on the top and the most negative rating on the bottom, the top box scores are the highest rating points on the scale (e.g. Very Satisfied and Satisfied) and the bottom box scores are the lowest rating points (e.g. Dissatisfied and Very Dissatisfied).

Translation (Text & Translations)

The Text & Translations feature allows you to create additional language versions of your survey or to customize the standard text of the default language version.

TURF Report

TURF stands for Total Unduplicated Reach and Frequency. It is a statistical model that estimates market potential with limited resources. It can help you choose the best configuration of products and services to offer in order to reach the maximum people in your target audience.

Unsubscribed Contact Status

Contact has clicked the unsubscribe link provided in the footer of any email message sent via an Email Campaign. A Contact with the Status of Unsubscribed will not receive any future Email Campaign email messages sent from your SurveyGizmo account.

URL Redirect

The URL Redirect Action allows you to send respondents to an external website. It also gives you the ability to disqualify the respondent and can be used to pass variables to the destination website.

URL Variable

URL Variables (aka Query Strings) make for a quick method for pre-populating existing data into a survey. With a simple query added to the end of the survey link, data can be stored as part of a survey response. This gives you the ability to push information into the survey through your survey for use within the survey body and/or to use when reporting on the survey response. A query string might look like this: ?department=Sales.

User Access Logs

Within Team & Enterprise Accounts, User Access Logs allow the account administrator to see what users are doing within their SurveyGizmo account. As an account administrator you can review user access logs for all activity in your account under Account > User Management > User Access Logs.

User Agent

The User Agent string contains information about a respondent's browser, operating system and device.

UTF-8 (Encoding)

UTF-8 (Universal Character Set Transformation Format—8-bit) is character encoding capable of encoding all possible characters (called code points) in Unicode. The encoding is variable-length and uses 8-bit code units. Encoding your Excel files into a UTF format (UTF-8 or UTF-16) can help to ensure that anything you upload into SurveyGizmo can be read and displayed properly. This is particularly important when working with foreign or special characters in Email Campaigns, Login/Password Actions, Email Lists, Data Import and Text and Translations. All of those features have the ability to receive CSV file uploads.

Validation

Validation allows you to format the acceptable input for a given question so that only specified parameters are allowed. For example, if you request that a respondent input an email address, you can set an open text question to only accept an answer formatted as follows: text@text.text.

Variable

A characteristic, attribute, or outcome usually measured by a single survey question.

Video Player Element

The Video Player element allows you to add video that respondents can view while taking your survey. Videos can be added to your survey in a number of different ways.

Webhook

A Webhook allows you to communicate with external webpages via an HTTP POST or HTTP GET standard. This action can send data via these methods and receive data through a special display method, all behind the scenes.

Website Intercept

Website Intercept is a distribution method that allows you to embed your survey on a webpage and trigger the survey to appear as a pop-up based on customizable conditions such as time spent on page or number of pages visited.

Website Pop-Up

A Website Pop-Up is a distribution method that allows yout to embed a survey on a webpage. The survey is served up as a popup window asking the visitor if they would like to take a survey. A 'yes' reply continues to the survey and a 'no' closes the window. This popup is triggered each time the webpage is loaded.

Word Cloud

Withing Standard Reports, a Word Cloud is the default visual representation of the number of times a word is used across respondents to a particular open-text question. The higher the frequency, the larger the word is displayed within the Word Cloud element.

Z

Z-Index

A property that specifies the stack-order of an Insights Canvas element. A canvas element with greater stack order (shown as a number) is always in front of an element with a lower stack order. While this sounds pretty complex, the idea is quite simple. For example, if you have one element 'x' with a z-index of 2 and element 'y' with a z-index of 1 occupying the same area of your canvas, element 'x' will show in front of 'y' due to x's higher z-index.

Zapier

Zapier is a service that allows you to integrate various web applications that otherwise do not have direct integrations with one another. Zapier makes it easy to automate otherwise tedious and repetitive tasks. Connect SurveyGizmo to a number of third party applications with the use of the Zapier Integration.
