Insights Canvas Overview

SurveyGizmo's Insights Canvas

SurveyGizmo's Insights Canvas allows you to build fully-customizable real-time dashboards to share with your clients and/or stakeholders.

The Insights Canvas allows for endless customization options. You can add question charts and data from multiple surveys, perform and output calculations, and add custom graphics and images, just to name a few options.

The customization possibilities truly are endless!

Setup

To create an Insights Canvas, click the Create a Survey dropdown on your SurveyGizmo Home Page and select Create an Insights Canvas.

Note: We strongly recommend creating and editing your Insights Canvas on a desktop/laptop. Limited editing capabilities are available on tablets and other mobile devices. A shared Insights Canvas is fully compatible with tablets and mobile devices.

1. Provide a name for your Insights Canvas.

2. Select a Canvas Size (720p is the default size). This will likely be dictated by your preferred method of sharing the finished canvas. The layout size can be changed after your canvas has been created, if needed.

3. If you prefer to use one of our pre-built canvas themes, select one from the available options.

4. Click the green Start Building button to create your Insights Canvas.

 Before You Start

The Insights Canvas introduces a number of new features and new functionality to SurveyGizmo. While you may be familiar with many features within the canvas, there are a handful of new items that we wanted to highlight to help you navigate through your canvas!

 Drag & Drop Functionality

If you have added an element to your canvas, you may find that you need to move it to another place as more items are added. To do this, click on the element that you wish to move to select it. Then click and drag the element into place.

 Resizing Elements

Once you add an element to your canvas, it can be re-sized by clicking and dragging the corners or sides of the element. Using this method does not automatically preserve the image's aspect ratio, and as such can result in distortion.

If you have a specific size (width x height in pixels) in mind, you can edit the element in question and input size values under the Layout & Options tab.

 Order (z-index)

An important aspect of the Insights Canvas, is that the elements that you add can be stacked on top of one-another. This is particularly useful if you want to place text on top of an image or shape, for example.

If you have stacked elements, how do you specify which element appears in front of the other?

You can do this by adjusting the Order (z-index) - a property that specifies the stack-order of an Insights Canvas element. An element with greater stack order (shown as a number) is always in front of an element with a lower stack order.

While this sounds pretty complex, the idea is quite simple. For example, if you have a Shape with an order (z-index) of 2 and Text with a z-index of 1 occupying the same area of your canvas, the shape will show in front of the text due to its higher z-index.

To place the text in-front of the shape, edit the text element and assign a higher order (z-index) than that of the shape, i.e. 3. Now the text will be placed in front of the shape due to the text element's higher z-index.

 Canvas Style

To access the Canvas Style toolbar, hover-over and click the picture icon located in the upper-left of the canvas. This toolbar will provide you with many of the customization options that are available in the SurveyGizmo Standard Report.

If you prefer to use a solid background color, you can choose from our quick colors, use the color wheel, or enter a specific HEX Code if you have it handy.

Alternately, if you want SurveyGizmo to import colors from an image or perhaps from your company's website, you can use the From Image or From Webpage options.

 Customize Your Chart Colors

Click Chart Colors in the left-hand panel of your Insights Canvas to get started customizing the colors that are used in the charts throughout your canvas.

Pre-built Color Sets

Under Pre-built Color Sets, there are color palettes galore. Be sure to scroll down to see all of the options. You can select a quick color palette that you like and then go to the Chart Colors section to further customize by adding, removing, or adjusting the existing colors in that palette.

Customize Text Font, Size, and Color

Under the Text options in the left-hand sidebar panel of your Insights Canvas, you can customize the font, font size, font weight, and color of your Body Text.

 Advanced > Canvas Options

The Advanced > Canvas Options settings under Canvas Style allow you to make further look and feel adjustments to your Insights Canvas.

Size

When you initially created your Insights Canvas, you had the option of selecting the canvas size. Via Canvas Options > Size, you can change your original size setting and even set a custom Width X Height.

Snap to Grid

Depending on how precisely you need to control the placement of your Insights Canvas elements, there are a couple of options available via the Snap to Grid setting. This option is also available when initially creating your Insights Canvas.

When you select, Use snap to grid, SurveyGizmo uses a grid to line up the items on the screen along perfect horizontal and vertical lines. This is a great option if you are using multiple elements and want to ensure that they are placed along the same horizontal or vertical axes.

When Use snap to grid is disabled, you can drag and drop canvas elements freely to place them exactly where you see fit.

 Advanced > Custom Code

Use the Custom Code section to make look & feel modifications using your own custom CSS code or to implement custom JavaScript to interact with your canvas elements. Use CSS or JavaScript to target elements that you have added to your Insights Canvas.

Edit a specific element to and access the Layout & Options tab to reference the element's unique Class Name for CSS purposes.

 Adding Layout Elements

After creating your Insights Canvas, you will be presented with a blank canvas page. You can begin adding elements by clicking anywhere on the screen or by using the green Insert button located at the bottom of the canvas.

There are two types of elements that can be added to your canvas: Layout elements & Data elements. We will review the Layout element options in this section.

 Add a Text Element

The Text element allows you to add text anywhere on your canvas. This element is great for providing insights or context for those that will be viewing your canvas. You can use text to provide explanations and background information to support your data and visuals.

You can customize the text size, font, color, as well as use HTML to do more advanced text styling.

For more details, visit the Adding Layout Elements tutorial.

 Add an Image Element

The Image element allows you to add images to your canvas from the SurveyGizmo File Library or from an externally hosted URL. This is a great means for adding your company's logo to your Insights Canvas, for example.

You can customize the image size and radius, among other options.

For more details, visit the Adding Layout Elements tutorial.

 Add Shapes to Your Canvas

The Shape element provides you with a library of default shapes that can be added to your canvas to help you highlight key points and annotate your data. Think of shapes as visual aids that help you tell the story of your data.

Review the below image for available shapes:

You can customize the size and color of each shape that you add. You can even rotate shapes (i.e. arrows) to point in different directions.

For more details, visit the Adding Layout Elements tutorial.

Create a Multi-Column Layout for Your Canvas

Add a Layout Block to create a multi-column element that can contain other elements within it. You can add between 1-4 columns as part of a layout block. Items added into a layout block behave as a unit.

A Layout Block is a great organizational tool if you have a large amount of elements in use on your canvas.

For more details, visit the Adding Layout Elements tutorial.

 Adding Data Elements

While the above-described Layout elements go a long way in helping you enhance the look & feel of your canvas, it would be difficult to provide much insight without being able to easily reference your survey data.

There are a number of ways to incorporate your survey data into your Insights Canvas. To add a Data Element, click anywhere on your canvas or click the green Insert button provided at the bottom of your canvas.

Add a Chart With Data Collected on One of Your Surveys

The Insights Canvas allows you to quickly add a Question Chart from one of your SurveyGizmo surveys. Use the Insert button or click anywhere on the canvas to add the chart.

You will be prompted to search for your survey (by title or Survey ID). Find and select your survey from the provided list, and use the Select a question to add menu to locate and add the question that contains the data that you want to chart.

Once you have selected the question, all compatible chart options will be presented and a default chart will be selected. Choose another chart if needed and click Save. The question chart and data will be added to your canvas. The data that is presented in your chart can be filtered and a number of other customization options are available.

For more details, visit the Adding Data Elements tutorial.

Use Custom Scripting to Run Calculations Based on Survey Data

The Calculation data element allows you to reference survey data, run calculations on the data, and output the results to your Insights Canvas. Use the Insert button or click anywhere on the canvas to add the chart. Use the below function to fetch results from a specific question within one of your surveys:

sgapiGetResults(%%sid, %%qid);

%%sid refers to the Survey ID of the survey containing the question data that you want to reference.

%%qid refers to the Question ID of the question that contains the data that you want to reference.

Show What Devices Respondents Are Using to Take a Survey

Using the Insert options, you can add a Device Chart for a given survey to illustrate the breakdown of collected responses across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

Select Device Chart from the data options and search for a specific survey (by title or Survey ID). Once the survey is returned, click on the name to select it and Save the element. The chart will be added to your canvas.

For more details, visit the Adding Data Elements tutorial.

Include Your Surveys' Response Counts Within Your Canvas

The Response Counts Data element, allows you to show a breakdown of Complete, Partial, and Disqualified responses (for a given survey) directly on your Insights Canvas. For more information about how response status is determined, visit our tutorial.

Add this element using the Insert button. Search for the associated survey (by survey title or Survey ID) and click on the title to select it from the provided list. Click Save and place it anywhere on your canvas.

For more details, visit the Adding Data Elements tutorial.

Customize Canvas Elements Via Layout & Options

There are a number of customization options available for each canvas element via the Layout & Options tab. To access these options, edit the specific element by clicking on the corresponding pencil icon and click on Layout & Options.

For more details on the customization options, visit the Layout & Options tutorial.

The Layout & Options tab provides you with the following options:

  • Color - Change the color of Shape elements.
  • Chart Colors - For Question Chart elements, elect to use the default chart colors (dictated by overall Canvas Style) or to use custom colors for the specific chart.
  • Height & Width - Provide specific height & width values (in pixels) for your element.
  • Rotation - Input a value (0 - 360) to rotate your element clock-wise. This option is particularly helpful when using a shape like the arrow (which has a specific orientation). As the arrow points to the right by default, inputting a value of 180 would make it point left.
  • Order (z-Index) - This property specifies the stack-order of an Insights Canvas element. An element with greater stack order (shown as a number) is always in front of an element with a lower stack order. While this sounds pretty complex, the idea is quite simple. For example, if you have a Shape with a z-index of 2 and Text with a z-index of 1 occupying the same area of your canvas, the shape will show in front of the text due to its higher z-index. To place the text in-front of the shape, edit the text element and assign a higher z-index than that of the shape, i.e. 3. Now the text will be placed in front of the shape due to the text element's higher z-index.
  • Hide this Element - Check this setting to hide the specific element from view on the canvas.
  • Class Name - Use the class name provided to reference the element in custom CSS via Canvas Style > Custom Code > Custom CSS. For more details regarding Insights Canvas styling options, visit the tutorial.
  • Chart Display - select the level of detail that is shown of your Question Chart elements. Learn more!
  • Tap Event - Assign an event that is triggered when the the layout or data element is clicked or tapped (on mobile devices). You might want to link a shape or chart to open a specific survey or take the viewer to your website. Tap Events are only active when viewing the Insights Canvas via Preview or while Shared.

Apply Filters to Your Data Elements

With the exception of the Calculation element, all Data Elements can be filtered based on logic conditions. To access the filtering options, edit the specific data element and click on the Filter tab.

You can filter based on the referenced survey's data, system fields, as well as email campaign fields (if available). Learn more about your filtering options.

Date Filtering

You also have the option to filter all Data elements on your canvas according to response date. To access the date filtering options, navigate to the calendar icon in the upper left of your canvas. Click on the calendar and apply your desired filter.

 Response Feed

The Insights Canvas dashboard introduces a number of new features to SurveyGizmo. One of these, is the Response Feed - a new chart type for displaying data collected via open-ended questions such as Textboxes and Essays.

The text that is presented can be color-coded according to answers provided in an associated question. In the above image, text from an open-ended NPS follow-up question is displayed in a different color depending on whether it is associated with a Promoter, Passive, or Detractor respondent.

The Response Feed can be displayed as a Horizontal or Vertical feed (horizontal pictured above). Learn more!
